The Rise of Prefabrication in Construction
We are currently living in the age of mass-manufactured buildings, where prefabrication has become the norm. Speed and efficiency are elements that building owners require of construction companies in order to cut costs and get jobs done quickly. Prefabrication in itself has changed over the years. In the past, it was just walls and surfaces that were pre-made. Now, however, you can order an entire room that is prefabricated, and all you need to do is drop it into your construction project.
Prefabrication has jumped in popularity in recent years due to a couple of key reasons:
- The Great Recession hit the construction industry hard, leading to mass lay-offs, a shift of skilled workers to other, more financially-rewarding industries, company closures, and plummeting revenues in construction. Prefab has led construction firms to open up shop anew, giving rise to more job opportunities and the renewal of the construction industry as a whole.
- Technological development has generated processes that make construction much easier. Robotics, 3D printing, laser scanning, and other construction-related technologies have changed the way we build.
Don’t be deceived by the misconception that prefabricated construction produces generic or cookie-cutter designs. It practically follows the same principle as traditional construction in the sense that architectural blueprints and designs are still the basis of construction. The only difference is that the building elements are created off-site and assembled in place like puzzle pieces.
Other technologies will eventually surpass prefabrication in the future, but in the meantime, prefabrication is set to become the standard practice in construction.
