2020: Navigating a Year of Unprecedented Change

2020: Navigating a Year of Unprecedented Change

It has been, to say the least, quite a year. Covid-19 impacts on “normal” activities, both personal and professional, have been unprecedented. What at first seemed like temporary setbacks to businesses and livelihoods have in many cases become entrenched, and most of us have had to rethink how we learn, work and live until we can safely return to a previous way of life. The good news is that we are more than capable of reinvention, and as is so often the case, advances in technology have helped us succeed at forging a new path forward in the most challenging of circumstances.

We made sure that people stayed connected.

As stay-at-home orders and business shutdowns increased—some of which are lately making a comeback— it became clear that people have a fundamental need to stay connected in whatever way they can. Friends, families, schools and organizations replaced in-person, face-to-face meetings with technology-enabled virtual sessions that, while certainly not the same, served an important purpose: to keep us connected to the people, places and things that are important to us.

Across the country, construction businesses felt the impacts of Covid-19, and most were forced to adapt to a new, uncharted reality almost without warning. As I wrote in July, contractors who made an investment in technology—and cloud-based platforms specifically-- were perhaps best positioned to weather the storm. I have personally heard from clients that the ProEst cloud platform was instrumental in keeping their estimating and project management teams connected and productive even when forced to work remotely, a significant advantage over systems that don’t offer the same level of access and interactivity. Some executives that I spoke to even predict a more permanent shift to a “distanced” work style for their teams, using shared online platforms and virtual meetings as a complement to traditional interactions. That ProEst has helped in some way to keep the lights on and the doors open for our clients means a lot to us as a company.

We’re also pleased that number of colleges and universities have used ProEst to provide remote learning for those enrolled in construction management programs. At a time when many school schedules were interrupted, institutions that made our cloud-based software part of their curricula were able to continue ProEst training—without being physically present in the classroom-- uninterrupted.

We kept growth and innovation going.

Here at ProEst, we’ve kept our foot on the gas all year long. Over the past twelve months, we’ve added many well-received new features to our platform, hired new people to support our expanding client base and created important new roles and responsibilities to enable our growth as a leading technology business. Of course, none of that would have been possible without the enthusiastic support of our clients and industry colleagues. We have continually asked for—and received— feedback about our product, our people and our company as a whole, valuable input that we use and appreciate on a daily basis. My thanks to everyone who has helped us perform better both as individuals and as an organization.

We take special pride in our ongoing expansion in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and throughout the United States, where a shift to cloud solutions for the construction industry continues to gain momentum every day. While slowdowns have occurred and the business climate is still uncertain, ProEst remains committed to the success of our clients and to moving the industry forward as a whole.

Most of us feel more than ready to retire 2020 to the history books. It has tested our will and  determination in a number of complicated ways. But 2020 has also shown us that creativity, cooperation and an ability to reimagine the world as we know it can make a profound difference. As we look ahead to 2021, please know that ProEst is always here to help. Facing change—and embracing new norms as they emerge—is something we can do better together.

Best regards and warm wishes for an outstanding 2021,

Jeff Gerardi
